What is Rulon?
Rulon® is the Saint Gobain Performance Plastics trade name for a family of reinforced proprietary PTFE compounds. This unique family of materials offers a combination of high compressive strengths, low coefficient of friction, and excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance while running without lubrication. These materials are used in bearing and seal applications at temperature extremes from -400°F to +500°F (-240°C to +260°C) with or without additional lubricants.
Notable Material Features
• High compression strength • Low coefficient of friction • Excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance while running without lubrication

Rulon® LR
Rulon® LR is the best-known, most widely used Rulon® formulation and has a long reputation for high wear resistance, low friction, good electrical properties, and chemical inertness. Rulon® LR makes a great sleeve, flange, or thrust bearing. It can also be bonded to nearly any surface to provide wear resistance and reduce friction. Color: maroon.
Rulon® J
Rulon® J is an all-polymeric reinforced, dull gold-colored PTFE compound. This Rulon grade is best used in aluminum and soft mating surfaces. It provides the lowest coefficient of friction of all Rulon® and provides good wear and abrasion resistance. This makes it ideally suited for start/stop applications where stick-slip must be eliminated. Rulon® J can be run on non-ferrous and non-metallic mating surfaces such as 316 Stainless, brass, and other plastic. It is used in both bearing and seal applications but is generally not suitable for use in alkaline or oxidizing acid solutions.
Rulon® 641
Rulon® 641 is manufactured from FDAcompliantmaterials which possess excellent load and wear characteristics. It offers excellent, continuous non-lubricated service up to 10,000PV – higher for intermittent service. While the load capacity of Rulon 641is generally limited to 1,000psiatroom temperature, deformation is a function of wall thickness, temperature, and load. Its compatibility with a wide array of mating surfaces, including mild steel,303and 316stainless steel, as well as harder materials, make it a good choice for most food and pharmaceutical bearing applications.
Rulon® 142
Rulon® 142 material is used for extremely heavy loads, and it is ideal for linear bearing applications such as slideways in machine tools and heavy equipment. It may also be used in expansion joints and bridge pads. Rulon® 142 material provides low friction, excellent non-lubricated wear properties, and good heat dissipation. It is etched on one side for adhesive bonding to the steel substrate and competes with Busak+Shamban’s Turcite® B product. Color: turquoise with a bronze tint.
Rulon® 123
Rulon® 123 is a glossy black non-abrasive compound for softer mating surfaces, such as stainless steel. This material has excellent chemical resistance and is FDA, USDA, and NSF compliant. It is less expensive than Rulon J but is slightly less flexible and higher in wear. It has a high resistance to deformation, a low coefficient of friction, and good thermal and electrostatic dissipation. This material has a maximum operating temperature of 550˚F(300˚C).
Rulon® W-2
Rulon® W2 is a black PTFE-based material developed for use in fresh-water applications. It exhibits low friction and excellent wear characteristics (one of the lowest wear rates in freshwater), as well as good thermal dissipation, preventing shaft distress. Its properties are enhanced when wet. Rulon® W2 is compatible with most metal substrates and soft mating surfaces is DWGV (European) certified for applications in contact with drinking water and is a good alternative to Rulon® J when superior chemical resistance is needed. Rulon® W2 should NOT be used on very soft mating surfaces or where electrical insulation is necessary. Color: black.
Rulon® AR
Rulon® AR was the first commercially available reinforced PTFE and is still quite popular today. It offers the best combination of flexibility and load-carrying properties and has high wear resistance, low friction, and good electrical and chemical properties. Rulon® AR fillers are ceramic in nature, so mating surfaces should be RC35 or harder. It’s used in seals, piston cups, and some bearings. Color: maroon.
How Custom Machined Parts Made of Rulon Can Improve Your Production Efficiency and Lower Costs
Custom machined parts made of Rulon can be a great way to improve your production efficiency and lower costs. This material is incredibly durable, with excellent wear and abrasion resistance, making it ideal for use in high-demand applications.
