What is Rulon?
Rulon® is the Saint Gobain Performance Plastics trade name for a family of reinforced proprietary PTFE compounds. This unique family of materials offers a combination of high compressive strengths, low coefficient of friction, and excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance while running without lubrication. These materials are used in bearing and seal applications at temperature extremes from -400°F to +500°F (-240°C to +260°C) with or without additional lubricants.
Notable Material Features
- High compression strength
- Low coefficient of friction
- Excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance while running without lubrication
Find the Right Rulon® Grade
Not all Rulon materials are the same. Different grades are formulated for specific operating conditions, mating surfaces and performance requirements. PMI machines a variety of Rulon grades to meet the needs of industrial applications.
Rulon® LR
A versatile choice for bearing and wear applications.
Rulon LR is one of the most widely used Rulon formulations. It provides high wear resistance, low friction, good electrical properties and chemical inertness.
Common applications include sleeve bearings, flange bearings, thrust bearings and other components where wear resistance and reduced friction are important.
Color: Maroon
Rulon® J
Designed for softer mating surfaces and low-friction applications.
Rulon J provides a very low coefficient of friction along with good wear and abrasion resistance. It is particularly well suited for aluminum and other softer mating surfaces.
Its performance characteristics make it useful in start-and-stop applications where minimizing stick-slip is important.
Color: Dull Gold
Rulon® 641
Designed for demanding bearing applications where material compliance may be required.
Rulon 641 offers excellent load and wear characteristics and is manufactured from FDA-compliant materials.
Its compatibility with a variety of mating surfaces makes it suitable for many food and pharmaceutical bearing applications.
Rulon® 142
Built for heavy loads and linear movement.
Rulon 142 is designed for demanding load conditions and is commonly used in linear bearing applications such as machine-tool slideways and heavy equipment.
It provides low friction, strong non-lubricated wear performance and good heat dissipation.
Color: Turquoise/Bronze
Rulon® 123
Low friction and chemical resistance for softer mating surfaces.
Rulon 123 is a non-abrasive material designed for use against softer mating surfaces such as stainless steel.
It provides good chemical resistance, resistance to deformation and a low coefficient of friction.
Color: Black
Rulon® W-2
Designed for fresh-water applications.
Rulon W-2 is a PTFE-based material developed specifically for applications involving fresh water.
It offers low friction, strong wear characteristics and good thermal dissipation, with performance properties that are enhanced when wet.
Color: Black
Rulon® AR
A proven combination of flexibility, load capacity and wear resistance.
Rulon AR combines good load-carrying properties with high wear resistance, low friction and strong electrical and chemical properties.
Common applications include seals, piston cups and select bearing components.
Color: Maroon
